Writing Prompts

Children have the most amazing imaginations! In classroom and workshop visits with these books, kids have entertained me with stories about giant chocolate chip cookies singing the national anthem and hip-hop dancing alien ants. When students have the freedom to write from their own imaginations, the results can be mind-blowing!

What are those voices in my root beer? What did my crazy, world-traveling aunt send me that my parents might not approve of? Why did the elevator take me to floor 29 when there are only four floors in this building?

Each of these thirty “And then…” stories keep your imagination going and going. Only you can determine how they turn out.

Story-Writing Sandwich Prompts, (Scholastic Teaching Resources, 2018) Purchase at Amazon.com

What if you have the beginning and the end of a story, but no middle? That’s like a sandwich that’s only two pieces of bread. What if you have the peanut butter and jelly, but no bread? That’s like having a middle, but no beginning and end.

The forty prompts in this book give you “sandwich stories” with just the bread, just the filling, or with the top slices or bottom slices missing. You fill in the rest!

Amazon Reviews:

Great for ages five and up!

I am teaching a creative writing class for 2-6 grade students, and my kids and I LOVE this book! In fact, we use it as our opener for every session. (We only meet once a week, so it doesn't get old. I'm not sure *any* single writing prompt book would work for a daily approach.) We've done it in a variety of ways -- kids writing their own conclusions to the stories, working in pairs or threes (oral or written), and orally with the whole group. Either way it works well. The kids have loved collecting their samples in their folders, and are very proud of what they've come up with. Many choose to keep going during our free-writing time as well.

I have also used this with my five-year-old and her friends, and they adore it as well. It makes a wonderful play date activity. It's a great way to enhance younger children's creativity, introduce story structure, etc.

Perfect resource to get student creative juices flowing

This book is the perfect resource to get student creative juices flowing. What a great way to take the anxiety out of staring at a blank page and encourage imagination. I can see children sharing their stories and marveling at all the different outcomes. A must have for any teacher who teaches writing!

Fun Prompts

I bought this for my daughter. We’ve had a blast coming up with fun stories based on these story starters. It’s helped her be more creative and in turn she’s willing to write now so her handwriting is improving.
